7 Best BuiltWith Alternatives in 2026 (Free Options First)

·Published ·Reviewed by
The short version

BuiltWith’s Basic plan has cost $295 a month since at least June 2013, and looking up a single site is still free, so the reason to switch is usually fit rather than price. AgentData, which is ours, is first: technology lists, the API and an MCP server all work free with no account. Wappalyzer is the closest like-for-like ($250 a month, free extension). WhatRuns is the best free extension. TheirStack finds back-office tools from job posts and is free to start. PublicWWW searches page source, from $49 for a day. Store Leads is built for ecommerce, from $75 a month. Bloomberry tracks who starts and stops paying for B2B software, from $199. They are listed in order of how much you get for free, and every price was read from the vendor’s own page on 27 September 2026.

Disclosure: AgentData is our product, and we put it first. It is first on the same test as everything else here, how much you can do for free, and its weaknesses are listed with it. Every fact about the other tools comes from their own pricing pages and docs, and every historical price links to the archived page we read it from.

When to stay on BuiltWith

Before you move, it is worth being clear about what BuiltWith does well, because none of the seven does all of it. It says it covers 491.9 million domains and 127,643 technologies. Every detection carries a first and last detected date, so you can see when a company adopted or dropped a tool, often years back. It offers more than 20 APIs and has had an official MCP server since May 2025, hosted at api.builtwith.com/mcp since 25 February 2026, which takes your API key, so Claude can query it directly. Records also carry spend estimates, revenue, emails, phones and names.

The case for leaving is narrower than most “alternatives” posts suggest. Basic at $295 a month covers two technologies and one login; Pro is $495 and Team $995. Its Chrome extension was last updated on 11 May 2022. And like every tool that scans websites, it cannot see software that never appears on a web page. If any of those is your reason, one of the seven below will fit better.

Thirteen years of pricing

We pulled the pricing pages of the two biggest tools from the Wayback Machine and Arquivo.pt. BuiltWith’s entry plan has not moved.

December 2025$295/moView capture
June 2026$295/moView capture

We read more than 20 captures between 2013 and 2026, and the six above are a sample; every one shows $295. You may see it said that BuiltWith’s entry plan went up from $199. We found no capture showing a $199 Basic plan from June 2013 onward. With US inflation at about 23% since 2021 (CPI-U, 2021 average against June 2026), the same $295 is roughly 19% cheaper in real terms than it was then.

Wappalyzer went the other way.

That is $39 to $250 in two and a half years, a rise of 541%. The plans were renamed along the way (the entry plan became Pro in 2023), so we compare the cheapest paid plan at each date. Wappalyzer is still $45 a month cheaper than BuiltWith at entry level, but its API and MCP server need the Business plan at $450.

Why the tools disagree

Look up the same company in three of these tools and you will get three different lists. That is mostly not an error. They find technology in four different ways, and each way can only see some of what a company uses.

MethodUsed bySeesMisses
Scanning pagesBuiltWith, Wappalyzer, WhatRuns, AgentDataAnything that loads on the page: analytics, chat widgets, ecommerce platforms, tag managersAnything that never touches the website, such as a CRM, payroll or data warehouse
Searching page sourcePublicWWW, NerdyDataAny string in the HTML, including tracking IDs and custom codeTools loaded later by other scripts, unless the index renders JavaScript (NerdyData says it does)
Reading job postingsTheirStack, HG InsightsBack-office tools a company asks candidates to knowCompanies that are not hiring; a tool named in an ad may not be in use yet
Reading infrastructureBloomberryDNS records, subdomains and certificate logs, which show SaaS tools set up on a company’s own domainTools with no footprint in DNS or on a subdomain

Three more things make results differ even between tools that use the same method:

  • How much of the site is scanned. A homepage scan misses the chat widget that only loads on the help centre.
  • When it was scanned. A tool removed last month still shows in any database that has not re-scanned. Check the last seen date where there is one.
  • Cookie banners. Many sites, especially in Europe, load analytics and ad tags only after a visitor accepts cookies. A scanner that does not accept will not see them.

Matching rules matter too. A loose rule can mistake the word “page” for Google Analytics, or a mention of Stripe for Stripe itself. That is why it is worth checking a detection on the live page before acting on it, and the script below does exactly that.

The 7 alternatives

In order of how much you can do for free.

1.AgentData (ours)Free technology lists, API and MCP

AgentData is free, and company, technology and signal data needs no account: up to 300 requests every 5 hours per IP, on the site, the API and the MCP server. A free key raises that and adds contacts; Pro is $99 a year. It holds 20.5 million technology detections across 3,073 technologies, found in live page source, headers and DNS using Wappalyzer signatures, each with a first and last seen date and a log of tools added and removed. You can browse the technology directory without signing up, or connect Claude without a key:

claude mcp add --transport http agentdata https://mcp.agentdata.run/mcp

The catch: it scans pages, so like BuiltWith and Wappalyzer it can’t see tools that never touch a website. Some profiles haven’t been crawled recently; opening one that is more than 30 days old queues a fresh crawl. Check the detections that matter on the live page with the script below before you act on them. The figures are on our live data page, and how AgentData compares, feature by feature is a separate page.

2.WappalyzerClosest like-for-like

The closest thing to BuiltWith. The browser extension is free with no account, has about 3 million users, and was last updated on 26 August 2026. A free account adds 50 lookups a month. Wappalyzer says it detects from HTML, scripts, cookies, network requests, certificates and headers, and paid plans add company details and contacts to lead lists. Pro is $250 a month, Business $450 and Enterprise from $850. Its MCP server is at mcp.wappalyzer.com/mcp and signs in with OAuth.

The catch: credits expire after 60 days, and the API docs and the MCP server both say you need the Business plan, so agent use starts at $450 a month. Entry pricing has risen from $39 to $250 since 2021 (see the pricing history above).

3.WhatRunsChecking one site, free

A free extension that shows what a site runs as you browse it, with no signup. It has about 400,000 users and was last updated on 27 April 2026 (version 1.10.0). Paid lead lists start at $99 a month.

The catch: it works one site at a time. There is no published API or MCP server, and WhatRuns doesn’t say how it detects, so you can’t tell what it is likely to miss.

4.TheirStackBack-office tools, from job posts

TheirStack reads job postings instead of websites, which makes it the best free way to find tools a website never shows: CRMs, data warehouses, ERPs, payroll. It says it covers 33,000 technologies across 13 million companies, and each result has a first and last date found and a confidence level. The free tier gives 50 company credits and 200 API credits a month after signup. The API starts at $49 a month for 1,500 credits, and the app sells 1,000 company credits for $109, once. Its MCP server is documented:

claude mcp add TheirStack --transport http https://api.theirstack.com/mcp

The catch: it only sees companies that are hiring and name the tool in an ad. A company can run Intercom for years without ever advertising a job that mentions it. There is no contact database beyond the hiring managers named on job posts.

5.PublicWWWFinding any snippet of code

A search engine for page source. Search for any snippet, such as a chat widget’s script URL or a tracking ID, and get every site whose HTML contains it. It says it indexes 925,567,179 pages. Without an account you search the top 1 million sites; a free account widens that to the top 3 million, with up to 1,000 rows a search. Pro is $109 a month or $1,090 a year, and if you need it once, a day costs $49 and a week $79. Business is $199 and Enterprise $499.

The catch: you write the search yourself, so results are only as good as your snippet. The API is on paid plans only and is limited to 2 requests every 30 seconds. There is no MCP server.

6.Store LeadsEcommerce stores

Built for ecommerce. Store Leads says it tracks 13.8 million stores across 409 platforms, with sales estimates and contact details. There is a limited free preview after signup. Premium is $75 a month; Pro ($250) adds the API and exports; Elite is $450 and Enterprise $950. Pro and above can connect Claude:

claude mcp add -t http storeleads https://storeleads.app/mcp -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

The catch: it is stores only, exports and the API start at $250 a month, and history (when a store switched platform or apps) is on Enterprise only.

7.BloomberryWho started or stopped paying for B2B software

Bloomberry detects B2B software from DNS records, subdomains, certificate transparency logs and script configuration, and tracks when a company starts and stops using a tool. That makes it the one to use for switch signals, such as companies that just dropped a competitor. It says it covers 1,700+ products. Signing up through a form gets 1,000 test API credits. The app or API starts at $199 a month, and Pro is $299.

The catch: 1,700 products is a focused list, not a full technology index. There are no contacts and no MCP server.

Check any tool yourself

Before you buy a list, test a few rows. This script checks 15 common technologies on whatever page you run it on. It reads the scripts the page loaded, its network requests, its global variables and its response headers, which are the same things a scanner reads. We tested it on allbirds.com on 27 September 2026, where it found Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, Shopify, Cloudflare and the TikTok Pixel.

  • Open the company’s homepage in Chrome and accept the cookie banner, or tags may not load.
  • Open the console: Cmd+Option+J on a Mac, Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows. Chrome may ask you to type allow pasting first.
  • Paste the script, press Enter, and read the table.
// Checks 15 common technologies against this page's scripts,
// network requests, window globals and response headers.
(async () => {
  const urls = [
    ...performance.getEntriesByType('resource').map(e => e.name),
    ...[...document.scripts].map(s => s.src).filter(Boolean),
  ].join('\n');
  const html = document.documentElement.outerHTML;
  const res = await fetch(location.href, { cache: 'no-store' });
  const cloudflare = !!res.headers.get('cf-ray') || /cloudflare/i.test(res.headers.get('server') || '');
  const has = (re) => re.test(urls) || re.test(html);
  const checks = {
    'Google Analytics': has(/gtag\/js\?id=G-|gtag\(\s*['"]config['"],\s*['"]G-|google-analytics\.com\/(analytics|ga)\.js/),
    'Google Tag Manager': has(/googletagmanager\.com\/gtm\.js|GTM-[A-Z0-9]{4,}/),

  console.table(Object.entries(checks).map(([tech, found]) => ({ tech, found: !!found })));
})();

If a vendor says a company uses a tool and the script can’t find it, look at the pages where that tool would live (a help centre for a chat widget, a checkout for payments) before deciding the vendor is wrong. If the tool isn’t on any page you can find, count it as unconfirmed.

If you would rather have Claude do the searching, see our scored list of sales data MCP servers.

Also considered

  • HG Insights. The enterprise option. It detects installs from job posts, resumes and company websites, with first and last verified dates, and adds IT spend data; its MCP server launched in OpenAI’s Codex in June 2026. We left it out of the seven because there is no free tier or pilot: pricing is through sales, on two-year terms.
  • SimilarTech. Now a front end for Similarweb. It has a free account with no card; Similarweb’s Sales Individual plan is $99 a month billed yearly or $129 monthly. We left it out because the technology data is now part of a larger sales product.
  • NerdyData. A page-source search engine like PublicWWW, and it says it renders JavaScript. Free reports return 100 rows, Basic is $200 a month, it claims 14.7 million domains, and it has an MCP server (npx -y @nerdydata/mcp). A close alternative to PublicWWW if you need rendered pages.
  • Datanyze. Often listed as a BuiltWith alternative, but it is now a Chrome extension from ZoomInfo for finding contact details while you browse LinkedIn. It is not a technology tool any more, so we did not include it.
